Job description

Our client is a high quality water, building services, and sustainability consultancy. They are currently seeking an ambitious Intermediate or Senior Sustainability Engineer to join their vibrant and thriving Sustainability team, to deliver a wide range of exciting BREEAM and WELL projects.  

Candidates must be a qualified BREEAM assessor with previous work experience and practical knowledge of carrying out BREEAM assessments from registration to final certification.  

Understanding of Health and Wellbeing certification schemes such as WELL building standard, Fitwel and Reset would be ideal with practical knowledge of at least one of the schemes and with WELL AP / Fitwel Ambassador qualification(s) preferred.  

Candidates will also have a good knowledge of sustainability in the built environment and be passionate about improving the buildings for their clients.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

+ Liaise with client stakeholders to develop the Sustainability Strategy including criteria for the delivery of the desired BREEAM/ WELL/ Fitwel rating, identifying any sustainability risks and appropriate mitigation measures and highlighting any opportunities to increase sustainability and wellness credentials  

+ Be Client facing, proactive and solutions driven with excellent communication skills  

+ Conduct BREEAM/ WELL Pre-Assessments and provide design advice  

+ Publish pre-assessment meeting minutes stating the potential building score achievable and advise on techniques suitable for integration into the overall design  

+ Produce evidence requirements for BREEAM / WELL credits  

+ Undertake gap analysis report/ schedule should the desired rating not be achievable  

+ Chair meetings and workshops with design team members to clarify requirements or reassess the design if any changes take place impacting the desired rating  

+ Prepare project updates, assessment reports, planning reports for client and submission to certifying bodies  

+ Provide support and monitor the BREEAM targets through the construction stage and verify the outcomes on behalf of the client  

+ Undertake a Post construction review and site visits for final certification  

+ Support senior members of staff in client and design team relationships  

+ Setting up projects on BREEAM Projects and WELL portal  

+ Carry out LCA/embodied carbon assessments  

+ Manage multiple projects and deliverables  

+ Support senior members of staff in client and design team relationships  

+ Fully support and comply with Internal Management System quality assurance and quality checking procedures  

+ Commit to supporting the strategic company sustainability policies and the internal environmental programme objectives  

 

For the training programme you will need to:  

+ Commit to goals and objectives of a career development programme including attendance of in-house and external technical and non-technical training  

+ Commit to achieving or maintaining IEMA or similar membership status through relevant professional institution  

+ Support the development of team members and undertake the mentoring of members of the engineering team  

+ Familiarise and learn about sustainable low energy initiatives and to share this with other members of your team and wider within the Partnership

Requirements

knowledge:  

Essential:  

- Awareness of energy and environmental related EU and UK Directives/ Regulations  

- Be conversant with renewable energy subsidies such as the Government backed Feed In Tariffs (FIT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)  

- Good knowledge of Photo Voltaics (PV) and Combined Heat and Power technology  

- An appreciation of sustainable buildings and how this can reflect upon design principles  

- Experience of Tracker + or IES Tap Knowledge of similar systems LEED, Passivhaus  

- Proficient in carrying out LCA/embodied carbon assessments  

Desirable:  

- Sound knowledge of how buildings are built and the design process that goes into their design  

- Building services design, energy performance modelling or carbon emissions assessments experience  

 

Skills:  

Essential:  

- A strategic thinker with a proactive attitude and attention to detail as well as good problem solving and communication skills  

- Capable of researching new ideas and technologies and look for opportunities to expand the business work stream  

- Engage with designers and sustainability consultants, in order to challenge and verify the design process  

- Excellent team working and inter-personal skills  

- Time management and prioritisation  

- Able to present and explain the thought and process behind sustainability requirements  

 

Essential Qualifications:  

- BEng, BSc, MEng or MSc in relevant sustainability or engineering subject  

 

Experience:  

- Experience and accreditation in the following;  

+ BREEAM / CFH assessor capable of registering the project  

+ BRE Code for Sustainable Homes scheme and/ or LEED  

+ BREEAM Accredited Professional [AP]
