My client is an independent, international consulting practice and they are seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer for their operations in Johannesburg in South Africa.
Reporting to the Business Unit Partner the principal geotechnical engineer will be involved in:
-Geotechnical investigations of sites and materials used for construction including tailings materials;
-Foundation, geotechnical and structural engineering of specialist structures;
-Engineer of record life cycle design, construction specification, formulation of trigger action response plans considering instrumentation and structure behavioural data, including design of the liner systems for residue disposal projects, initial and ongoing earthworks construction requirements, numerical modelling of slope stability and expected real time behaviour (taking account of drained and undrained effective stress behaviour) during construction, operating, decommissioning and closure phases;
-The life cycle design will include all legal, water and all other resources protection and health, safety and environmental requirements with focus on client risk and hazard management requirements;
-Ongoing attention to individual and team development and growth to remain at the forefront of residue management technology will be a key requirement and success factor.
Qualification: A Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering Degree with speciality in soil mechanics and/or mineral residue design and management.
Professional registration: Registered professional engineer (where jurisdictions include such legislated professional associations, such as Australia, Canada, South Africa, UK, the United States, etc.).
Years of experience: A minimum of 15 years with at least 8 years in the consulting field.
Type of experience: Extensive experience in Mineral Residue facility design, construction, operation and closure and related legal, environmental and techno-economic requirements. A background including post-graduate studies in soil mechanics would be an advantage. Extensive experience in numerical modelling of soil mechanics and tailings engineering projects would be an advantage.
This position involves working in multi-disciplinary teams on a range of projects both nationally and overseas; international travel may form a significant part of the role.
