Opportunity:
To provide technical leadership and management of Designers and Design Houses for a portfolio of individual projects covering; Water (Non-infrastructure and Infrastructure), Dams and Reservoirs, Wastewater (Infrastructure and Non-Infrastructure) throughout all Design Stages from Feasibility/ Outline, Detail Design, through supporting the Construction Delivery and Handover of projects.
The Design Manager will form an integral part of the Welsh Water Capital Delivery Alliance (WWCDA) Design Team and will use their technical expertise and experience to ensure that the most cost beneficial and sustainable solutions are promoted through the Welsh Water Investment Decision Points (IDPs).
They will work with their respective Client team leads and Design House leads to ensure clarity of scope and stakeholder acceptance of solutions. They will ensure promotion of best practice, continuous improvement, consistency and efficiency throughout the design process.
Key Aims & Objectives:
To work collaboratively with all project stakeholders, including but not limited to; other, Partner Design Managers, the company's Construction Managers, DCWW Project Managers, DCWW WWA/WA Teams and DCWW Operations to ensure the cross pollination of solution development / ideas / innovations / case studies / lessons learnt and continuous improvement for the benefit of the WWCDA.
Promotion of Collaborative working, Efficiency and Continuous Improvement within Design Houses to encourage the WWCDA Alliancing environment and creating an environment and opportunities for knowledge sharing.
Support the company's Senior Design Manager with resource profiling and review for all current and anticipated projects in line with the cost forecasts on a rolling 12-month basis and, where possible, to the end of the AMP. This will involve frequently reviewing resource profiles where critical projects are progressing.
Work together with the Head of IST and Alliance Workstream Design Managers in frequently reviewing Project Programmes and Milestones and identify any risks to programme together with analysing adequate mitigation measures. Creating a more forward looking approach to Milestone achievement and provide greater programme visibility to ensure we can efficiently deliver projects.
Contribute and drive the delivery of design efficiencies in accordance with the WWCDA Efficiency goals.
Leading by example to promote an Incident Free Environment
You will be responsible for:
Responsible for efficient co-ordination of design solutions for allocated projects. Be the main point of contact for the Project on behalf of the company between Feasibility Design to start of Construction.
Work closely with Design Partner Leads to ensure high quality, consistency and efficient provision of design deliverables; ensuring their accountability for cost, programme and technical quality of feasibility work and ensuring these are in line with any efficiency targets set by the WWCDA Board. This will include the co-ordination of Design House Leads and reporting to WWCDA Workstream Design Managers and the Head of IST on Efficiencies and Lessons Learnt via the relevant reporting routes (Efficiency / Lessons Learnt Database etc).
Attendance (where appropriate) at relevant meetings, including but not limited to:
Project Review Group (PRG) meetings,
Design Review & Construction Drawing Reviews (as deemed appropriate),
R&V Meetings (as deemed appropriate),
Monthly Design Progress Meetings
You will:
Be computer literate, MS Office and MS Sharepoint experience essential
Give attention to detail
Ability to work independently, but also manage teams, both office
Have good communication and inter-personal skills
Take pride in producing high quality reports
Have a full driving license
Experience/Knowledge:
Extensive experience of water/wastewater engineering, including in project lead roles.
Able to provide direction and motivation at feasibility and detail design stage to a diverse team.
Able to communicate and work effectively with people from other partner organisations, backgrounds and disciplines, utilising their knowledge and experience to best effect.
Experience of technical design leadership ensuring that work is undertaken to the correct Standards and Specifications, following the appropriate Systems of Work and Quality Assurance procedures.
Experience of project management.
Experience of sustainability in design, particularly reducing the embodied and operational Carbon Footprint.
A demonstrable track record of promoting and driving innovation to produce optimal engineering solutions at lowest whole life costs.
Good people management skills, ensuring that the best talent is used to meet the resource demands for the projected workload.
