Job description

Our client is a company that works in the Carbon & Energy sectors and they are looking to recruit for a Head of Design for their Yorkshire operations.  

To help meet the business growth they are seeking an experienced senior level design engineer to lead their Design Team as Head of Design, reporting to the Director of Engineering. The Head of Design would be required to manage staff currently working remotely from and at the location of the Design Office that is based in Sheffield. You will be able to show you have had 10+ years of experience in this design area and, in addition, 5+ in a senior role managing multiple projects. You will have a strong interest in the field of Energy Engineering Systems for domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. You will have a keen eye for detail and be technically proficient.  

 

Duties/Responsibilities include:  

- Leading and growing a team of mechanical, electrical and district heating design engineers delivering the development of Energy Centres, District Heating schemes and building services to prospective buildings:  

- Grow a multi-disciplinary design team, including assessing competency gaps and undertaking recruitment and resource management.  

- Undertake line management and staff welfare, including supporting staff training and development, to help everyone reach their potential.  

- Ensure design delivery aligns with the procurement strategy, project cost plan and construction time scales.  

- Work collaboratively with their Commercial, Pre-Construction and Construction teams to enhance project delivery.  

- Develop appropriate processes to streamline the business unit.  

- Develop effective working relationships within the business, with clients and other stakeholders to ensure objectives are being met.  

- To monitor and manage compliance with design and construction standards and contractual obligations, particularly CP1.  

- Support the creation of a working environment, where everyone is respected and heard, and treated equally.  

- Provide Principal Designer support

Requirements

Knowledge and Qualifications:  

- Academically qualified design engineer  

- Chartered status or equivalent professional status  

- Proven ability to manage designer’s responsibilities under CDM.  

- Ideally will have attained CP1 qualification.  

 

Skills:  

- Ideally you will have the majority of the following skills;  

- Experience of design and design management of multi-million pound projects  

- Proven record in delivering design projects to programme, budget and quality requirements  

- Must have the ability to work accurately under pressure and have an open management style with an emphasis on team working  

- In-depth expertise in Mechanical Building Services systems and their design from RIBA Stage 2 through to Stage 5.  

- Experience in multi-disciplinary engineering projects design and delivery, leading large and complex teams in either - Design Consultancies or Contracting Firms  

- Demonstrable experience of developing and influencing collaborative team culture and behaviours, as well as working effectively within a multidiscipline and diverse team.  

- Experience of team building and identifying skills gap before they impact  

- Commitment to transparency and integrity  

- Passion and initiative to drive continuous improvement and innovation  

- Impressive communication skills  

- Must be willing to travel on reasonable short notice to visit project’s sites
