Our client is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering, project management and building services consultancies. They are currently looking for a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer with experience in Building Physics to join their London Building Design Practice on a permanent basis.  

This role will encompass a multi-sector experience, but expertise from working within the Rail, Residential, Education, Commercial sectors would be a benefit.  

The opportunity will require candidates to be client-facing as well as being involved in the day-to-day design and thermal analysis of projects.  


The role requires a blend/mix of Mechanical Building Services & Building Physics skills.  


The office is based in London but our client supports flexible working.  


Main responsibilities:  

To undertake engineering services design and consultancy work under the direction of the line manager or project leader.  

To undertake calculations, production of drawings, specifications and reports, site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and any other relevant duty required to comply with the project brief.  


Other responsibilities will include:  


Ensuring an understanding of project briefs.  

Design and specification of all Mechanical Building Services systems - heating, cooling, ventilation, controls, etc.  

Carry out the production of detailed calculations using industry standard digital tools inc. Excel, IES, Hevacomp, in-house developed tools, etc.  

Experience of coordinating analysis work with the wider design team to enable accurate representation of the proposed (or actual) physical space to be modelled – coupled with an ability to communicate what the impacts key design decisions by other disciplines will have on the thermal performance of the space.  

Ability to produce technical reports that discuss the analysis processes undertaken, inputs/ outputs, conclusions, impact on other disciplines (primarily Building Services & Architecture), etc.  

Preparing technical specifications using NBS.  

Preparing drawings for drafting by the BIM team, a working understanding / use of Autodesk (& Revit).  

Note- experience of Microstation & AECOsim is beneficial.  

Site surveys, inspections, and monitor site works.  

Report & technical note writing.  

Managing elements of project delivery and an understanding of budget costings.  

Reviewing progress, inc. reporting any anomalies and changes of scope to the line manager.  

Help & assist with technical development of junior staff.

Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering or related subjects.  

Chartered Engineer (or working towards CEng) with CIBSE / IMechE.  

Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools inc.; IES thermal modelling package, Hevacomp, NBS and Microsoft packages.  

Well-rounded understanding of the principles of building physics, from concept design input, options comparisons, and thermal modelling.  

In-depth understanding of thermal analysis, including peak plant sizing, annual energy analysis, lighting control, daylighting, natural ventilation.  

An understanding of the level of thermal analysis required at each design stage.  

Understanding of the building physics input required to interfacing disciplines, such as specialist lighting, MEP, structures, and architecture at each design stage.  

In-depth understanding of IES-VE, including the following modules: VE Compliance, Radiance, Apache HVAC, Apache Systems, Macro flow, Micro flow, Vista-Pro and an ability to extract sustainability outputs (e.g., to support BREEAM, LEED etc.) from IES-VE.  

Accreditation as Low Carbon Consultant (design and DSM) and Energy Assessor (level 5) would be favourable.  

Part L compliance and EPC calculations – both SBEM and dynamic simulation.  

Experience working in a design consultancy and/or experience of working within a contractor design environment is essential.  

Have a good knowledge of appropriate technical standards.  

Able to take charge of personal project deliverables, make decisions on developing the discipline design elements, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.  

Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with client is essential, with an ability to present to technical & non-technical audiences on the topic of thermal analysis.  

Ability to undertake site inspections, covering thermal analysis inputs, including plant inspections and review of O&M manuals.  

Ability to plan workload for themselves & others.
