Chartered Building Surveyor
An exciting opportunity to manage an established Building Surveying department within a multi-disciplinary organisation
Oxfordshire Office
-capability to take on the management of an existing department and the ambition to develop both the existing client base and the take advantage of the opportunities that are available from working within a multi-disciplinary organisation with Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Traffic and Highways and Geomatics departments.
Key skills & experience
• Minimum qualification - Chartered Building Surveyor MRICS
• At least 10 years post-qualification experience in Building Surveying and project management
• Good working knowledge of all aspects of building surveying and building design
• Proven staff management skills
• Proven client management including negotiating and influencing skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proven ability to manage staff, lead and motivate individuals and teams to achieve targets
• Driving licence
Management Responsibilities
• Financial and technical management of the Building Surveying team
• Supervision of Building Surveying staff including workload, management of training, welfare etc.
• Attend in-house and external meetings with clients, local authorities and other professionals
• Represent the business, in a professional and courteous way.
Management Responsibilities
• Undertaking the role of Principal Designer on a range of projects (mainly commercial)
• Management and co-ordination of the architectural, structural and civil engineering designs on a wide range of new-build and refurbishment projects
• Financial, technical and project management input throughout the design and construction stages of projects

Scope of work undertaken on a typical project
Preliminary Design
Preparation of outline briefs involving visits to sites throughout the UK, review of planning histories, site investigation reports, services records
Attendance at design and stakeholder meetings
Condition surveys of existing buildings
Preparation of preliminary concept designs and outline specifications
Provide advice on preliminary budgets, programmes and project viability
Review of statutory requirements
Assessment of risks at the initial stages of the project, including preparation and updating of risk registers
Planning Stage
Preparation of planning stage designs (including space planning)
Preparation of planning application submissions (including applications for listed building / conservation area consent)
Preparation of Design and Access Statements
Co-ordination of input from other departments in relation to Transport Statements, Flood Risk Assessments, Drainage Strategies, ground conditions etc.
Co-ordination of designs from external consultants (ecology / arboriculture etc.)
Discharge of planning conditions typically involving preparation or input into a Construction Transport Management Plan and Construction Environmental Management Plan and co-ordination of design input from other project consultants such as MEP, geotechnical specialists, arboriculturists, ecologists, landscape consultants
Detailed Design
Detailed technical design for architectural design
Co-ordination of input from other departments in relation to structural and civil engineering design
Development of strategies for services supplies and drainage infrastructure
Development of phasing to suit project constraints
Preparation of Building Regulation / Warrant applications
Input on design reviews relating to BREEAM, sustainability and embodied carbon assessments
Preparation of detailed designs for tender
Preparation of detailed Pre-Construction information package
Preparation of technical specifications
Preparation of construction strategy, including input into the phasing of the works
Assessment of the sustainability and environmental impact of projects
Assessment of project in terms of statutory requirements, especially health and safety
Presentation of design at tender meetings
Responses to tender queries
Contract Administration
Attendance at site meetings
Site inspections to report on site progress, quality and compliance issues
Contract administration (responsibilities dependent on contract type and project value)
Ongoing liaison and reporting to Client Representatives
